Running VMware Workstation on openSUSE 11.0
OpenSUSE 11.0 is available now and ready to use. My old distribution is openSUSE 10.3 version and currently running in the new openSUSE world, 11.0. It contains new features and working fine. I usually use VMware Workstation to run WindowsXP, as a secondary OS which use for other Microsoft applications.
When I installed VMware 6.0.3 version (rpm) on openSUSE 11.0 I faced with some problems. Installation went well without any difficulty; however until I run vmware-config.pl some error occurred:
Your kernel was built with “gcc” version “4.3.1″, while you are trying to use “/usr/bin/gcc” version “4.3″. This configuration is not recommended and VMware Workstation may crash if you’ll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler “/usr/bin/gcc” version “4.3″ anyway? [no]
According to some of forums discussed to use vmware-vmblock, even I tried that way, I still had a problem. After a while I finally decided to use the latest version 6.0.4 build-93047.
The following information shows step by step installation:
- Make sure you have pre-installed kernel-source, gcc and make.
- Download here the latest rpm of VMware Workstation 6.0.4 build 93057.
- Install VMware Workstation rpm.
- Run vmware-config.pl (during the configuration it will give you an error, but it works just fine).
Here is my WindowsXP via VMware on openSUSE 11.0.
Enjoy!!!
